Adam Sandler's 17-year-old daughter Sunny is stepping into the spotlight in her first ever lead film role, and the early verdict couldn't be more glowing. Her new Netflix film, Don't Say Good Luck, landed on the streaming platform today (Friday, August 14) and has already stormed to a perfect 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
A Breakout Role
The coming-of-age comedy-drama sees Sunny take centre stage as Sophie Birenbaum, a talented high school theatre pupil who secures the sought-after lead part in her school's staging of the musical Waitress. However, her delight is instantly clouded by heartbreaking family news. Just moments prior to her audition, she discovers that her mother's cancer has made a return.
The narrative charts Sophie's emotional struggle as she tries to balance teenage relationships, rehearsals and academic commitments while attempting to support her family and prevent her life from falling apart.
Star-Studded Cast and Crew
The film features an impressive combination of emerging young performers and established Hollywood figures. Melanie Lynskey – most recognised for her role as Rose in Two and a Half Men – takes on the character of Elizabeth, Sophie's loving and unwell mother. Max Greenfield, known to viewers from New Girl, portrays Ted, Sophie's supportive father. Meanwhile, Steve Buscemi and Bebe Neuwirth feature as Sophie's attentive grandparents.
Stephanie Beatriz takes on the role of Ms. Parker, the school's trendy drama teacher, while Jack Champion portrays Jack, Sophie's charming leading man and potential love interest. The film is directed by Julia Hart (Stargirl, Miss Stevens), who co-wrote the screenplay alongside Laura Hankin and her husband, Jordan Horowitz.
