Netflix has announced a new Stranger Things spin-off, taking fans back to the 1950s – but this time, the action will unfold far from Hawkins. Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure is due to land on the streaming platform in 2028, with an eerie first teaser giving fans a glimpse of the new setting.
The announcement was made on November 6, also known as Stranger Things Day – the fictional date when the events of the original series began. While the hit show was set in Hawkins, Indiana, the prequel will take place in the fictional town of Marion, Nevada, on the other side of the US.
And it is going much further back in time, with the new story beginning on April 19, 1955, decades before the original series’ 1980s setting.
Teaser reveals new setting
The teaser opens with a bicycle lying abandoned beside a radio playing the 1950s hit Sh-Boom by The Crew-Cuts. The music crackles with static as the camera moves towards a warning sign marking the area as restricted. Dark clouds gather overhead before a flash of lightning cuts through them and the clip ends.
The trailer is accompanied by the message: ‘Before Hawkins, there was Marion.’
The new series will also be set before the events of the stage production Stranger Things: The First Shadow, which explores Henry Creel’s past in Hawkins in 1959 and his eventual transformation into the villain Vecna.
Creators return for prequel
Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer are returning for the project, alongside writer Kate Trefry. The Duffer Brothers said they had been dreaming of the spin-off for years.
‘It’s Stranger Things, but also thrillingly fresh, with a new setting, new heroes and villains, and new… Actually, we’re not allowed to say any more,’ they said in a statement published on Netflix’s Tudum site. ‘Now, on to casting. In the meantime – watch the skies, nerds!’
Trefry, who will serve as showrunner, co-creator and writer, said it was an ‘insane honour and privilege’ to bring another chapter of the franchise to life. She added: ‘We have had the time of our lives returning to all the horror, wonder and mystery of the flagship, while also telling a wholly new story, one we hope will blow your minds and break your hearts all over again.’
Original series legacy
The original Stranger Things series first arrived on Netflix in 2016, turning its young cast into global stars. Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Sadie Sink, Maya Hawke and Joe Keery were among those who found fame through the show, alongside established actors including Winona Ryder and David Harbour.
The story follows a group of children who discover a series of supernatural threats linked to an alternate dimension known as the Upside Down. After a decade on screen, the series reached its conclusion with a two-hour finale released in January 2026.
But the franchise is far from over, with the animated spin-off Stranger Things: Tales From ’85 also expanding its fictional universe. Netflix has yet to reveal casting details or a more precise release date for Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure.
