Netflix has quietly added the 2024 horror film 'Abigail' to its streaming library. The movie, which has earned an 84% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, stars British actor Dan Stevens, known for his roles in 'Downton Abbey', 'The Guest', and 'Beauty and the Beast'.
The cast also includes Kathryn Newton from 'Big Little Lies' and 'Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania', Giancarlo Esposito of 'Breaking Bad' fame, Matthew Goode from 'Department Q', and Alisha Weir, who played the lead in 'Matilda the Musical'. Melissa Barrera, known for her roles in recent 'Scream' films, also stars.
The plot follows a group of aspiring criminals who kidnap a 12-year-old ballerina, the daughter of a powerful underworld figure. They hold her hostage in a secluded mansion, expecting a $50 million ransom. However, they soon realise that the little girl is no ordinary child, and their numbers begin to dwindle as they face a terrifying threat.
Critics have praised the film for its fresh take on the horror genre. One reviewer described it as 'devilishly disgusting and effortlessly humorous', while another called it a 'bonkers bloodbath' that introduces a new monster icon. Audiences have also responded positively, with one viewer calling it 'heart-pounding, freaking hilarious, gore fest' and another noting its 'perfect mixture of blood and comedy'.
