A major royal rift is unfolding behind the gates of Windsor, with the Prince of Wales said to be 'furious' and at his 'wit's end' over his uncle's refusal to relinquish his lavish home.
The Duke of York is digging his heels in at the 30-room Royal Lodge, despite immense pressure from the monarch and the future king to downsize. His stubborn stance is creating a significant headache for King Charles III, who is keen to streamline the monarchy's property portfolio.
A Home Steeped in Controversy
Prince Andrew secured a 75-year lease on the grandiose Royal Lodge from the Crown Estate in 2003, investing millions in renovations. However, his position became untenable following his disastrous Newsnight interview and subsequent settlement in a civil sexual assault case, which led to him being stripped of his military affiliations and royal patronages.
It is understood that both the King and Prince William believe it is wholly inappropriate for a non-working royal to reside in such a vast, costly property, especially when the more suitable Frogmore Cottage is available.
The Frogmore Standoff
The King's offer of Frogmore Cottage—previously the home of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex—was seen as a sensible solution. Yet, Andrew has point-blank refused to move, despite the Royal Lodge's exorbitant running costs, which include a full-time housekeeper and nightly security patrols estimated to cost up to £3 million a year.
Sources suggest William's anger stems from the broader implications for the institution. He is determined to modernise the monarchy and views his uncle's refusal to cooperate as a direct challenge to the King's authority and a threat to the family's reputation.
With neither side showing signs of backing down, this bitter standoff threatens to become one of the most protracted and public royal disputes in recent years.
