Queen Letizia of Spain suffered an embarrassing fall on Saturday while touring a fishing boat during a family engagement in the coastal town of Llanes. The 54-year-old monarch slipped and hit the deck, but swiftly got back to her feet without assistance.
The Spanish royal family, including King Felipe, Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofia, were present to present the 2026 Exemplary Town Award to the Santa Ana Fishermen's Guild. As part of the celebrations, they embarked on a brief tour of a local fishing vessel.
Moment of the fall
Footage captured by the Spanish magazine Hola! showed the Queen suddenly losing her footing and falling onto the deck. Aides rushed to her side, but she brushed herself off and stood up entirely unaided.
The incident occurred amid choppy sea conditions. Just a day earlier, waves had splashed over the very deck where the royal family was walking.
Engagement continues
Despite the mishap, the family continued with the day's itinerary. Princess Leonor, the heir to the throne, delivered a speech paying tribute to the area's working women, recalling how they "would put on their rodiellu (a type of net) on their heads and travel throughout the municipality and beyond".
