Queen Elizabeth II's Fashion Legacy Unveiled in Historic Buckingham Palace Exhibition
With the centenary of Queen Elizabeth II's birth approaching, Buckingham Palace is set to host the most extensive display of her fashion ever assembled, opening tomorrow. Titled Queen Elizabeth II: Her Life in Style, this landmark exhibition features more than 300 pieces from the late monarch's wardrobe, including vibrant dresses, hats, shoes, handbags, and even a rare pair of trousers, with nearly half of these items being shown to the public for the first time.
A Journey Through Seven Decades of Royal Style
The exhibition traces Queen Elizabeth II's evolution from a young princess to Britain's longest-reigning monarch, highlighting how fashion served as a powerful tool of communication throughout her 70-year reign. Despite the emphasis on contemporary trends, practicality remained a cornerstone of her outfits, enabling her to fulfill her duties with grace and efficiency.
Curator Caroline de Guitaut, who also serves as Surveyor of the King's Works of Art, dedicated 18 months to assembling the collection. She meticulously reviewed thousands of items, many preserved in pristine condition by the Royal Collection Trust following the Queen's passing in September 2022.
"I think she had a definite sense of what suited her. She absolutely knew how she wanted to appear," Ms. de Guitaut remarked. "Of course, designers would incorporate the prevailing fashion of the time, but ultimately, it came down to practicality and what allowed her to carry out her responsibilities. That consideration was always present."
Highlights and Rare Artifacts on Display
The exhibition includes a diverse array of garments and accessories, such as:
- The royal christening robe from 1841, worn by Queen Elizabeth II and displayed publicly for the first time.
- An unusual poodle-style skirt from her 1951 trip to Canada.
- A dress intended for a 1952 Commonwealth tour but first worn in Nigeria in 1956.
- Glamorous evening wear from state visits to countries like Japan, Ireland, and China.
- Iconic pieces like her wedding dress, coronation gown, and the peach dress from the James Bond Olympics sketch.
- Jewelry, including the Aquamarine tiara, and items from designers like Norman Hartnell and Angela Kelly.
Running from April 10 to October 18 at the King’s Gallery in Buckingham Palace, this exhibition offers a unique glimpse into the sartorial choices that defined a historic reign, celebrating Queen Elizabeth II's enduring legacy as her centenary nears.
