King Named Royal Patron of New Charity Commemorating Late Queen Elizabeth II

The King has been announced as the Royal Patron of a newly established charity created to commemorate the late Queen Elizabeth II ahead of what would have been her 100th birthday. The independent Queen Elizabeth Trust will provide grants to communities across the United Kingdom to develop and regenerate shared public spaces.

Three Projects Unveiled for Queen's Centenary

This initiative is one of three distinct projects being formally unveiled on Tuesday, which marks the late Queen's birthday, to honour her enduring legacy. The British Government is contributing a substantial one-off endowment of £40 million to launch these commemorative efforts.

The funding will support a variety of community enhancements, including the development of underutilised buildings, the creation and improvement of green spaces, and the establishment of neighbourhood hubs. Additionally, the money will facilitate access to essential skills and training required for organising local events and activities.

Community Focus and Leadership Statements

Sir Damon Buffini, the appointed Chair of the Queen Elizabeth Trust, expressed his honour and excitement in a public statement. "I'm honoured and excited to have been chosen as the founding Chair of the Queen Elizabeth Trust to help guide its direction from the start," he said.

"This is a real chance to support communities across the United Kingdom and bring shared spaces back to life: places where people of all ages and backgrounds can meet, connect, and belong. As an organisation, we're ambitious about what we can achieve, and our goal is to significantly increase our impact by attracting support from others. I'm looking forward to rolling up my sleeves, listening and learning from communities, and seeing what we can make happen."

Formation and Additional Memorial Projects

The establishment of the charity follows two years of extensive engagement by the Queen Elizabeth Memorial Committee with various groups throughout the UK. Lord Janvrin, who chairs the committee, highlighted the charity's purpose.

"I hope this new charity will encourage people to remember the life and service of the late Queen by recognising the importance she attached to strengthening that sense of engagement and belonging amongst local communities," he remarked.

The other two commemorative projects include a National Memorial landmark and gardens located in St James's Park, and a Digital Memorial tribute dedicated to her life and service. Further specific details regarding all three initiatives are scheduled to be announced on Tuesday.
