Prince Harry could face a painful choice between his life in Britain and his wife's happiness if reports that the Sussexes are planning a return to England prove to be true. Reports this week suggested Harry and Meghan Markle are preparing to move back to the UK six years after quitting as senior working members of the Royal Family and relocating to California.
However, fresh claims suggest the couple may not see eye to eye over exactly what the move means — with Britain potentially representing home for Harry, but only a temporary experiment for Meghan. A source cited in Cosmopolitan has claimed that Meghan has agreed to spend six months in the UK as a "test", rather than committing to a permanent return.
Meghan's six-month test
The insider said: "Meghan is agreeing to try it, but she isn't moving back to Britain. Six months is the test. She wants an exit strategy."
That could leave Harry facing an increasingly difficult situation if he rediscovers the life he left behind — while Meghan decides that she and their children would be happier back in California. Another source claimed the divide could eventually force the Duke of Sussex into a deeply personal decision.
They said: "Eventually, Harry may have to choose between his wife's happiness and his country. That is the nightmare scenario nobody wants to talk about."
Where is home?
The reported disagreement appears to centre on a fundamental question: where is home? For Harry, a return to England would mean returning to the country where he was born and raised and being closer to the charities and organisations with which he has longstanding connections.
Meghan, meanwhile, has built a new life in California since the couple stepped down as working royals in 2020. She is also expected to continue working on her lifestyle brand, As Ever, wherever the family is based.
Reports suggest the Sussexes are not planning to cut ties with their American life. They are said to be keeping their Montecito home, as well as their holiday property in Portugal, potentially giving the family options if the UK move does not work out.
School plans and UK residence
The couple are also reportedly preparing for their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, to start school in September, adding to speculation that the move could happen sooner rather than later. Frogmore Cottage, their former UK home, is no longer available to them, and the family are said to be planning to live in a private, non-royal residence in England instead.
If the reports are accurate, the Sussexes' return could therefore be far more complicated than simply packing up and coming home.
