An all-women team is set to compete in the Marymass Festival’s Greasy Pole event for the first time since the 1990s. The event takes place on Marymass Saturday, August 22 at Irvine Moor.
Ayrshire Radio's All-Female Team
Ayrshire Radio has put forward the team, made up of station presenters Ali Wright, Amanda Jean, and Bex Johnson, along with a secret member not yet announced. The team is sponsored by local business Caledonian Windows.
The women will have to work together to scale the 25ft greased pole, with the aim of securing a ham tied to the top. Teams consist of four to five people who climb on top of each other to reach the peak.
Marymass Parade Participation
Ayrshire Radio will also have a float in the Marymass parade. The radio station attended the festival last year, but this is their first year with a team in the Greasy Pole competition.
Presenters' Excitement
Ali presents the Breakfast show – Ali and Michael in the morning – from 6am-10am every weekday with Michael Smith. Amanda Jean presents Evening Vibes with Amanda Jean from 7pm-10pm Monday to Thursday, while Bex presents Drivetime with Billy and Bex from 4pm-7pm every weekday (4-6 on Fridays) with Billy Kirkwood.
Bex said: “I am excited for the Greasy Pole. I’ve watched it my whole life, and felt that the people who do it are like superheroes. I’m excited to give it a go this year, and it made it even more special knowing that I’m part of the first female team to try it since the 90s.”
