Bravo's Summer House Set to Become Major Reality TV Franchise
The production team behind Bravo's popular reality series Summer House is actively working to transform the show into a comprehensive franchise, drawing inspiration from the expansive model of The Real Housewives. The original programme, which chronicles a group of friends sharing a rented house in the Hamptons during the summer months, has already generated two derivative series, with several more currently in development.
Strategic Expansion and Location Scouting
Glenda Hersh, co-founder of the production company Truly Original, provided exclusive details to Deadline, revealing that the team is actively evaluating two new locations for potential Summer House spin-offs. Hersh emphasised the critical criteria for a successful location, stating, 'You need a place that people go to on weekends, then come back to their own city life, and it has to extend over a summer in order to make the storytelling compelling.'
She elaborated on the franchise vision, explaining, 'Summer House is its own franchise. We are exploring, in really advanced ways, a couple of other locations, which would be Summer House: Location, where you are continuing with that specific story style and loose format, but with a change of location and a change of cast.' This approach aims to replicate the core dynamic of the original show while introducing new settings and personalities.
Existing Spin-Offs and Their Trajectories
The franchise's first extension, Winter House, combined cast members from Summer House, Vanderpump Rules, and Southern Charm alongside new additions, following the group during a two-week winter rental. Although it aired for three seasons, Hersh acknowledged that the limited filming window posed challenges for narrative development.
Another spin-off, Summer House: Martha's Vineyard, featured an all-black cast but was 'put on pause' by Bravo in 2024 after two seasons. Meanwhile, a new series titled In The City is scheduled to premiere later this year, focusing on original Summer House cast members Kyle Cooke, Amanda Batula, and Lindsay Hubbard as they navigate adult life in New York City.
Interestingly, Hersh hinted that In The City might evolve into its own standalone franchise rather than remaining a direct Summer House derivative. She noted, 'We are looking into the possibility of having the cast that does not come from a Summer House, but starts as an In The City. Because once that becomes a form in and of itself, it can travel as its own distinct format and style that doesn’t necessarily have to be birthed by a Summer House.'
Strong Performance and Broader Bravo Context
The flagship Summer House series continues to demonstrate robust popularity, with its tenth season premiering to the highest debut ratings in the show's history. This success underscores the enduring appeal of the format and supports the strategic expansion into new iterations.
Beyond the Summer House universe, other Bravo properties are also thriving. Vanderpump Rules, which recently underwent a reboot with an entirely new cast for its twelfth season, is rumoured to be returning for another season according to TMZ reports. The reboot has proven successful, achieving the biggest premiere for a new series on Bravo last year, with the season twelve cast expected to return alongside new faces.
Additionally, the Vanderpump Rules spin-off The Valley is set to return for its third season on April 1, while The Valley: Persian Style is nearing the conclusion of its inaugural season. This broader ecosystem of interconnected reality programming highlights Bravo's commitment to building and sustaining franchise models across multiple series.
