Wayne Rooney has revealed that he was once in talks for a job on ITV's The Voice UK, despite not being a singer or presenter. The former footballer, 40, said he received an email asking if he wanted to be involved with the show, but declined the opportunity from ITV bosses and producers.
Rooney's unexpected offer
Speaking on Capital FM's Breakfast Show to hosts Jordan North, Chris Stark and Sian Welby, Rooney said: "So they actually asked me." He added: "They were doing it, um, a few years back. [I] Got this email, 'Do you wanna be involved in The Voice?'"
However, he was not offered the position of being a judge. Rooney explained: "I'm thinking, 'Ah, I could be doing a—being a judge.' It was to turn the lights on at the start at Old Trafford!" He added: "I was like, 'There's no chance I'm doing that' Even put me as a wingman, put me as... one of the guests on the side ... in a little sidecar or something."
Love of music and I'm A Celebrity speculation
Rooney, the all-time top goalscorer for Manchester United, admitted he loves singing, though he acknowledged it's not his strongest point. "I love music, I love singing, but I'm not very good at it," he laughed.
According to reports, Rooney could be heading to Australia to participate in I'm A Celebrity. Sources claim he is in "advanced talks" with bosses on the programme, and that he is keen to impress his four sons, Kai, 16, Klay, 13, Kit, 10, and Cass, eight, by taking on the Bushtucker Trials.
A source claimed: "Wayne is in advanced talks for I’m A Celebrity and if they secure him, he'll be their biggest signing in the show's history." They added to The Sun on Sunday: "Coleen proved to be hugely popular when she took part two years ago, and bosses think Wayne is going to match her success. ITV have been in negotiations with him for some time and are thrilled that they've reached this stage."
An ITV spokesperson told The Mirror: "Any names suggested for I'm A Celebrity are just speculation." When asked about the news during an appearance on This Morning, Rooney told host Ben Shephard: "I've been asked all the time as well, and there's been rumours for the past few years, and there is again this year. [You'll] Have to wait and see."
