Harry Redknapp Opens Up About Awkward I'm A Celebrity Elimination Blunder

Former football manager and I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! star Harry Redknapp has publicly addressed the cringe-worthy incident where he mistakenly called comedian Seann Walsh by the wrong name during a tense elimination on the ITV reality series. The 79-year-old, who previously won the main show, found himself in the hot seat during the South Africa edition this week.

The Tense Elimination Decision

After his Lion team lost to Jimmy Bullard's Rhinos in a dramatic challenge, Redknapp was tasked with choosing which campmate would be the first to leave. His options included Ashley Roberts, Scarlett Moffatt, Sir Mo Farah, boxer David Haye, and comedian Seann Walsh. Ultimately, Redknapp selected Walsh for elimination, but in the process, he accidentally referred to him as 'Stewart,' creating an awkward moment that has since gone viral.

Speaking at an event following the episode's broadcast, Redknapp explained his thought process behind the difficult decision. 'I get into camp and I feel terrible and by the time I get there I have got to tell them who I am sending home,' he revealed, according to The Mirror. The former Tottenham manager admitted he had initially tried to choose himself, but was told that as 'King' of the camp, he had to select one of his 'subjects' instead.

Why Other Campmates Were Spared

Redknapp detailed why he couldn't bring himself to eliminate the other Lions. 'So I'm not gonna send David Haye home, he might knock me out, and I am getting on great with Mo Farah and the girl on the next bed to me was Ashley Roberts. A Pussycat Doll. I'm not sending her home!' he exclaimed. He added that Roberts had been teaching him yoga at 7 AM each morning, making her elimination particularly unthinkable.

The decision was made more difficult by a prior conversation with Walsh, where the comedian had expressed how important the show was for his career. 'Seann had told me the show was 'great for his profile' and was hoping to do well in the series by lasting a long time,' Redknapp recalled. This knowledge made the elimination particularly distressing for the football legend.

The Name Mix-Up Explained

Redknapp attributed the name blunder to sheer anxiety. 'I am dreading breaking the news to Seann, due to our prior conversation about him wanting to be there,' he explained. 'In my worry, his name went completely blank out of my mind - accidentally referring to him as 'Stewart' instead.'

The other campmates quickly corrected him, with Redknapp remarking, 'afterwards they all said 'Harry, his name is Seann'... he will hate me.' He later realized his mistake and could be heard apologizing to Walsh, who embraced him before leaving the camp, showing there were no hard feelings.

Boxer David Haye attempted to lighten the mood by joking, 'I always thought it was Shane Walsh.' To which Redknapp replied, 'I thought it was Stewart didn't I? Did you hear that, my mind went blank. I lost the plot.'

Ant and Dec's Playful Response

Presenters Ant and Dec couldn't resist capitalizing on the blunder for comedic effect during their segments. The duo joked that Walsh's hotel room had been booked under the name 'Stewart Walsh' - with Redknapp humorously blamed for the booking error. The lighthearted moment provided some relief from the tense elimination atmosphere.

I'm A Celebrity... South Africa continues to air on ITV1 and ITVX, with Redknapp's candid explanation shedding new light on the pressures faced by contestants in the high-stakes reality environment.
