Love Island winner Nathan Massey has agreed to get a vasectomy after his Instagram post surpassed the target he set with his wife, Cara De La Hoyde. The couple, who won the second series of the ITV show in 2016, set the goal during an episode of their Fubar Radio show, Not In Front Of The Kids.
The challenge that went viral
Nathan said he would book the procedure if their Instagram page received 500 comments and 3,000 likes on a post discussing the decision. The post has since received more than 5,500 likes and 572 comments. As the numbers climbed, Nathan wrote in the caption: 'Should of upped the likes.'
The couple have two children: Freddie-George, born in December 2017, and Delilah, born in July 2020. They do not want more children, and Cara said she is 'desperate' for Nathan to have a vasectomy.
Cara's plea and Nathan's hesitation
Speaking on their show, Cara explained: 'On the occasion that we do have sex, there's still a chance I'm going to get pregnant. I don't want to go and have an abortion. There is no way on earth I'm going to have another child, and I don't want to put myself through that mentally, and physically.'
Nathan defended his reluctance, saying: 'It's the crown jewels man, what if it goes wrong?' Cara responded that having 'a little slit in your ball bag' does not compare to giving birth twice.
Mixed reactions from fans
Instagram users were divided. Some supported Cara, with @Zo3mc writing: 'Women spend their entire lives using contraception and have to experience so many changes from giving birth. It's only fair to support your partner by doing your bit.' Others, like @onemaggs, urged caution: 'You're so young still, and you never know how you will feel about this decision, later on in life you may feel completely different to the present.'
Cara also asked fans whether Nathan should be allowed to 'spread his seed wherever he would like to spread it' or get the vasectomy. She added in the comments: 'Come on help me out 🙏🏼.'
The couple have not yet posted an update on whether Nathan has booked the procedure.
