Mother-daughter duo Michelle and Emma Sweeny received brutal feedback from judges on Tuesday's episode of My Reno Rules after their en suite was branded 'the worst bathroom ever made' on reality television. The judges condemned the space as 'dark, drab, dreary and claustrophobic'.
Judges Left Speechless
Judges Julia Green, Neal Whitaker, and Simon Cohen were lost for words upon entering the room, which featured black tiling and a shower wall. 'I'm just confused,' said a shocked Simon as he assessed the design choices, including black basins and a matching black toilet.
Renovation guru Whitaker was unimpressed, noting that the bathroom did not complement the rest of the house. 'It does not marry with anything else in the house,' he said, referring to the light and airy design used elsewhere in House 1. 'Main bedroom and en suite, they are like bacon and eggs, they've got to go together.' Simon joked, 'It doesn't feel like bacon and eggs—it feels like bacon and cheese cake.'
Harsh Words
Interior stylist Julia Green did not hold back. 'Quite frankly, it was one of the worst bathrooms I've ever seen,' she said, leaving Michelle and Emma in shock. 'I just did not like it at all. It was big, blocky, dark, and drab.' Simon added, 'Opening the door and seeing that wall made a small space feel even smaller.'
Whitaker criticised the women for ignoring his advice against using black tiling. 'You didn't have to take my advice, but I knew that [black tiling] was going to [make the en suite] feel like a dark tomb.'
Contestants' Response
Michelle explained their vision: 'We wanted to do something a little bit different, we wanted a moody bathroom.' After claiming they only had '10 minutes' to select a tile, Michelle conceded their en suite was 'probably' not the right style for the house. 'To be slammed again is not a good feeling,' she said. Emma added, 'Words are like super hurtful, words stick.' Michelle commented, 'We've been singled out with some terrible words for both weeks—it stings.'
The pair have previously faced criticism for their living room, which judges called 'hideous'. After the devastating review, Michelle and Emma sit at the bottom of the leaderboard in fourth place with 42 points. Nathan and Julia are in third with 45.5 points, while Mitch and Shaz top the table with 50 points, followed by Franky and Isaac on 49 points. The teams compete for a top prize of $1 million, with the runner-up receiving $250,000.
