Meghan Markle's guest appearance on the 18th series of Masterchef Australia has drawn sharp criticism from industry experts. The Duchess of Sussex appeared as a judge on the show, which aired in Australia on Sunday and is set to be shown in the UK later this year.
The episode was recorded during Meghan and Prince Harry's week-long visit to Australia in April. She featured alongside MasterChef Australia judges Poh Ling Yeow, Sofia Levin, and Jean-Christophe Novelli.
Chef Slams Meghan's Role
Chef Jameson Stocks told The News International he questioned why she was on the show. "When it comes to cooking, she contributes absolutely nothing – it’s all complete nonsense," he said. "Unless the contestants are somehow inspired by her sliced fruit, I honestly can’t understand why she’s there."
Stocks added: "She has absolutely zero credentials to be even near a stove never mind Masterchef – Masterchef is a program to inspire the next generation or inspire people to do better showcase themselves through food - she’s about as inspiring as an out of date chicken."
Attack on Netflix Show
Stocks also launched a scathing attack on Meghan's Netflix series: "If her show has been nominated for an Emmy, I’d hate to see the competition. It is among the biggest loads of nonsense Netflix has ever produced – so embarrassing that it’s hard to believe they would pay her for it. It’s a horrendous, slow, lethargic, egotistical pile of trash."
Meghan Insisted on Non-Royal Name
During the appearance, Meghan insisted on using her non-royal name, a direct response to issues during their Royal tour. According to reports, she was reportedly "frustrated" with producers when she was described as "royalty" in a promo for the show.
A source told The Daily Mail: "Meghan and her team had 'specifically' made clear they did not want the word 'royal' used." After introducing herself as "Meghan" on Sunday night's show, she gushed about her love of Australia, having first visited the country with Prince Harry eight years ago.
