Love Island returned to ITV screens on Monday, June 1, for its thirteenth season, but fans were quick to criticise a major new twist introduced in the first episode. Host Maya Jama welcomed twelve new singletons to the Mallorca villa, but the evening took a dramatic turn when two bombshells, George, 28, and Yasmin, 23, were given the power to send two contestants home within 24 hours for any reason they choose.
The bombshells were told by Jama: 'In 24 hours, one girl and one boy will be dumped, and that decision will be down to both of you.' She added that they could dump anyone for any reason, but must keep the decision secret from the other islanders. This marks the first time in the show's history that contestants have been given such power so early in the series.
Fans took to social media to express their displeasure, with one writing: 'I don’t think UK Love Island is ready. Still feel like getting new bombshells in to kick out islanders that just got into the villa is an unfair thing to do and a total waste of their time.' Another commented: 'UK Love Island already p***ing me off,' while a third declared: 'Love Island UK low key in its flop era.'
The first six couples formed on the opening night include model Samraj, 25, with student Mica, 21; fashion business owner Jasmine, 27, with business owner Lorenzo, 28; property broker Aidan, 23, with videographer Ellie, 24; nurse Angelista, 24, with West End performer Ope, 27; primary school teacher Sean, 25, with detective Lola, 25; and Robyn, 21, with electrician Samuel, 25.
Viewers will have to wait until Tuesday's episode to see which two islanders George and Yasmin decide to dump. Love Island continues tonight at 9pm on ITV2 and ITVX.
