Love Island narrator Iain Stirling is set to front a new BBC competition series, Race Against the Tide. The show will air on BBC Scotland, BBC Two and BBC iPlayer in August.
Format and Premise
Seven teams, each consisting of a professional sand sculptor and a complete novice, will compete against the clock and each other. They have six hours to create intricate sand sculptures on West Sands Beach in St Andrews before the incoming tide washes them away. A yellow flag is raised at the halfway mark.
The series synopsis states: "Seven teams, each made up of a professional sand sculptor and a complete newbie to the craft, Race to create breathtaking sculptures. With just six hours before the tide rolls in, the teams must transform tonnes of sand into spectacular themed creations while battling the clock, the weather and each other."
Host and Judges
BAFTA-winning Scottish comedian Iain Stirling, known as the voice of Love Island, will host the show. He said: "Audiences are going to love Race Against the Tide! It's got everything you could want from a summer show. Stunning Scottish scenery, incredible creativity, and, of course, lots of sand puns - you can be shore of that. I can't wait for everyone to see what our teams create."
The sculptures will be judged by artist and sculptor Sadie Clayton and world-renowned sand sculptor Jamie Wardley. They will assess creativity, narrative flair, technical ability and the "wow factor" before each masterpiece is washed away.
Contestants and Prizes
At the end of each episode, one duo is crowned Sand Champions, while another faces elimination. After six rounds, one team will be named the inaugural winners. The competing newcomers come from diverse backgrounds, including a leather craftsman, cake decorator, plasterer, stationery designer, carpenter, art teacher and fine art student.
Race Against the Tide will air on BBC Scotland, BBC Two and BBC iPlayer in August.
