Emmerdale fans were left devastated this week as Dawn Fletcher (Olivia Bromley) died in hospital after a tragic car crash that also killed Jimmy King (Nick Miles). The ITV soap aired a heartbreaking sequence in which Joe Tate (Ned Porteous) cradled his late wife moments before a dream sequence showed the couple sharing their first dance.
Wedding day tragedy
Dawn had gone into premature labour after Jimmy's vehicle careered into her and Joe's wedding marquee. She gave birth to a son, and despite earlier resolve to walk away from her husband-to-be, everything appeared to have fallen into place for the couple. However, Joe returned to her hospital room to find her unconscious. Medics attempted to resuscitate Dawn, but she tragically passed away having lost too much blood, according to the Daily Star.
Fan and cast reactions
Viewers took to social media to share their grief. One wrote on X: "Absolutely devastated! I know Joe isn't the most nicest of people always but this scene was heartbreaking! First Jimmy, now Dawn! Absolute scenes, well done Emmerdale, such a sad episode!" Another commented: "Couldn't stop crying. That ending was beautiful and really well done."
Numerous cast members also shared heartfelt tributes following Olivia Bromley's exit. A message on the family account of Mabel Addison, who plays Dawn's daughter Clemmie Reed, said: "When you're a child actor, four years is a long time. It's a huge part of growing up, and Mabel has been so lucky to spend those years working alongside such a wonderful on-screen mum @oliviabromley_."
Tribute from Clemmie's family
The tribute continued: "Olivia, thank you for every laugh, every hug, every scene and all the memories you've helped create over the past four years. Your kindness, patience and support have meant so much to Mabel, both on and off screen, and we'll always be grateful for the bond you've shared."
Mabel's mum thanked Olivia for helping develop her daughter as a young performer and for instilling "confidence, determination and work ethic" in everything she does. The tribute added: "While we're sad to see you go, we're also so excited to see what the future holds for you. Wishing you nothing but happiness and success in your next chapter - you deserve every bit of it. Thank you for being a such a special part of Mabel's journey. You'll always be her TV mum, and we'll cherish the memories forever."
Olivia responded in the comments: "Okay now I am crying [heart emoji] how lucky I have been! The BEST soap children I could have ever asked for. Miss you all already x."
Fans will recall that Dawn rescued Clemmie from a troubled and abusive household, becoming her legal guardian after discovering the young girl sleeping in a dog bed surrounded by drug dealers. Upon learning Clemmie was the biological half-sister of her son Lucas (Noah Ryan Aspinall), Dawn fought a custody battle alongside her then-husband Billy (Jay Kontzle) before welcoming Clemmie into their home.
Emmerdale airs weekday nights at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
