EastEnders aired the aftermath of Joel Marshall's violent attack on Thursday, July 23, as one suspect was revealed. The schoolboy, played by Max Murray, was confirmed alive after being found unconscious with a blow to the head.
Revenge plot unfolds
Joel had recently returned to Walford after six months in prison for attacking his step-mum, Vicki Fowler (Alice Haig), and filming a sexual encounter with Avani Nandra-Hart (Aaliyah James). He planned to leave after his dad, Ross Marshall (Alex Walkinshaw), said he wasn't welcome, but was talked into an end-of-term party by Amy Mitchell (Ellie Dadd) and Avani.
Local teens Denzel (Jaden Ladega), Nugget (Juhaim Rasul Choudhury), Ricky (Frankie Day), Lily (Lilia Turner), and Barney (Lewis Bridgeman) tied Joel to a fence and poured alcohol over his head. They left him tied up for 45 minutes until Will Mitchell (Freddie Phillips) arrived and demanded his release. Joel was later found unconscious nearby.
Police investigation and suspect
Police arrived and DC Craig Ingram (Matthew James Bailey) questioned the teenagers as witnesses. Later, at The Arches, Harry Mitchell (Elijah Holloway) confronted the group and revealed a hammer inside a plastic bag. Barney stayed behind and pleaded, "Please, Harry, you’ve got to help me."
However, fans are not convinced Barney attacked Joel. One viewer wrote on X: "The Arches is normally unlocked anyway, Harry. Barney didn’t do it anyway, Barney thinks he’s done it but someone else did, otherwise this whodunnit would be too easy to solve! #EastEnders." Another said: "I really think Avani did it, and Barney is covering up for her. #EastEnders."
A third added: "#EastEnders Barney covering for Avani." One viewer shared: "I think he’s covering for Avani. Even though he’s Nicola’s son, Harry’s brother, he doesn’t seem to have a nasty bone in his body. Barney seems too nice. If he DID do it, he must have been provoked. #EastEnders."
EastEnders airs Monday to Thursday on BBC One and iPlayer.
