EastEnders fans are devastated as Jean Slater (Gillian Wright) faces the threat of homelessness, with many questioning why her daughter Stacey (Lacey Turner) isn't providing financial support from Brazil.
Jean's financial struggles and confrontation with Suki
Earlier this week, Jean's landlady, Suki Panesar (Balvinder Sopal), confronted her about three months' unpaid rent. The conversation quickly escalated when Eve (Heather Peace) jumped to Jean's defense, and Jean hastily left the discussion, leaving fans to wonder if she will be evicted.
Jean is also increasingly worried about her granddaughter Lily Slater (Lillia Turner), who was caught up in the violent attack on Joel Marshall (Max Murray). "Stacey is trusting me with her daughter; she is relying on me to keep her safe," Jean told Kat Moon (Jessie Wallace) on Tuesday (August 11).
Jean's fear of letting Stacey down
Later, Jean confronted Lily about spending time with ex-convict Joel, admitting, "Your mum is trusting me to look after you, I've not always been a trustworthy person, I know that. Stacey is the only person in the whole world who has faith in me being able to do the big, important things, I can't let her down."
But fans are asking why Stacey isn't supporting her family more, especially given her new life abroad.
Why did Stacey leave EastEnders?
In 2025, Stacey suffered the death of her ex-husband Martin Fowler (James Bye) shortly after their romantic reunion. Months later, she used Martin's insurance policy to buy The Queen Vic for her cousin Kat as an investment. After much deliberation, a struggling Stacey left Walford with her youngest children, Arthur and Hope, to start a new life in Brazil, where she works at her brother Sean Slater's (Robert Kazinsky) restaurant.
In October 2025, Stacey left behind her mum, Jean, her eldest daughter, Lily, and granddaughter, Charli, trusting the wider Slater family to look after them.
Fans question Stacey's financial support
Despite Stacey's new job and investment in The Queen Vic, fans believe she isn't helping Jean, Lily, and Charli financially. On Reddit, one viewer pointed out: "Stacey gave Kat and Alfie all of Martin's money, ran off to Brazil and left her mum, daughter and granddaughter totally skint?"
A second asked: "I thought Stacey was taking a wage out of the Vic?" A third on X added: "Where's all that money Stacey had? Surely she sent her mum some considering she left her child and grandchild with Jean #eastenders."
Another echoed: "Jean should be getting benefits or why isn't Stacey contributing from Brazil when Lily has a little girl at home? #EastEnders." One fan pointed out: "How is Jean skint? The Slaters have 3 businesses! Surely Kat could help them, considering Stacey gave them money for the pub. #EastEnders."
EastEnders airs Monday to Thursday on BBC One and iPlayer.
