Charity Dingle (Emma Atkins) continues to spiral in Emmerdale as she tells another lie to protect her granddaughter Sarah Sugden (Katie Hill). In the episode dated August 14, Mackenzie Boyd (Lawrence Robb) confronts Charity, claiming he has figured out what really happened to Dr Caitlin Todd (Caroline Harker).
Mackenzie tells his wife that he believes she intentionally killed Dr Todd. Hiding her relief that Mack hasn't uncovered the actual truth, Charity lies and confirms his theory, saying she did murder Caitlin.
Mackenzie Confronts Sarah
Later, Mackenzie confronts Sarah, saying he knows what really happened to Dr Todd. Sarah stays quiet, not wanting to give anything away. Once she realizes Mack is believing a different story, she listens as he tells her she needs to 'pull it together' because the police may pick up on her behavior and work out that she's hiding something.
The possibility of the truth being revealed is high. Charity is falling apart, Sarah is on edge, and DS Ramsden (Chelsea Edge) is certain the duo are lying about what happened.
Background of the Cover-Up
Sarah killed Dr Todd after walking in on a showdown between the surgeon and Charity. She shoved Dr Todd to defend herself and her gran, causing Caitlin to fall, hit her head on a table, and die. Serena Sugden (Casey Al-Shaqsy) helped Sarah and Charity create a cover story, and Charity initially told police she killed Caitlin.
Charity was released from questioning and returned to the Woolpack, where Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley) grew suspicious. Overwhelmed, Charity told her family that Dr Todd sexually assaulted her, a bombshell that stunned everyone. Mackenzie, however, remained doubtful and pushed for the truth, leading to his confrontation with Charity.
