Channel 5 has commissioned a factual 90-minute drama about the breakdown of Nicola Sturgeon's marriage to Peter Murrell after he was found to have embezzled £400,000 from the SNP.
To Nicola, Love Peter will explore the couple's relationship over the 12-year period that Murrell spent diverting funds from the SNP while he was chief executive, using the money on items including a £124,500 motorhome, a Jaguar SUV and Montblanc pens.
Murrell's conviction and jail sentence
Murrell, 61, was originally arrested in 2023 and was jailed this summer for five years and three months. His conviction earlier this year left the former Scottish First Minister's reputation in tatters.
In June, Murrell was sentenced to five years and three months in jail after admitting to embezzling more than £400,000 from the SNP.
Sturgeon's divorce and the drama's sources
Sturgeon announced her decision to divorce her husband in January 2025, and it was recently revealed she has not spoken to him since he was imprisoned. She said at the time they had been separated for some time before the news went public.
The new drama is set to draw on "an extensive range of sources" and evidence gathered by Police Scotland and The Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service about Sturgeon's estranged husband.
Production details and casting
Channel 5 said To Nicola, Love Peter will lift "the lid on this extraordinary story and how it contributed to the downfall of one of the biggest political figures of a generation".
TV chiefs are believed to be in the process of casting actors to play Sturgeon and Murrell, who were married for 15 years. Murrell and Sturgeon, 56, started dating in 2003 before marrying at Glasgow's Oran Mor venue in 2010.
The feature-length drama is being made by Wonderhood Studios, which made Power: the Downfall of Huw Edwards, starring Martin Clunes. Wonderhood's executive chair, David Abraham, said: "This project reflects our growing ambition to develop quality dramas about contemporary stories that resonate with broad audiences."
