Celebrity Traitors final thrown into chaos as Acaster confesses
Celebrity Traitors final chaos as Acaster confesses

James Acaster's confession at the Celebrity Traitors roundtable has thrown the final into chaos, with the BBC urged to intervene to protect the show's future.

The comedian admitted to being a Traitor after coming under pressure during Thursday night's (October 29) roundtable, making history in the Traitors universe in a way that has raised serious concerns about the competition's integrity.

Acaster's Bombshell Confession

James was reluctantly recruited by Maya Jama and Richard E. Grant at the start of the series, which resulted in Amol Rajan's murder. He subsequently played the game as the Faithful he always aspired to be, while grudgingly selecting murder victims in the turret each evening.

Following weeks of staying beneath the radar, James found himself in the firing line courtesy of Michael Sheen during the roundtable. He confessed: "I just want to explain my situation. I was made a Traitor without wanting to be."

The entire roundtable responded with astonishment, as James elaborated: "I've had a unique experience on this, that no-one's had before, where I wanted to be a Faithful, that's all I wanted to be. I couldn't just go, 'Guys, it's me, vote for me.' But that's... that's all I can do, really."

He continued: "I've been thinking about it long and hard. I was not playing the game that I wanted to. I wanted to be a Faithful so much that, at the beginning, I made sure I pointed out the perfume bottles to everyone, so no-one forgot them. I am so proud of you guys for catching me the way that you did, and I wanted it to be that I was found logically, and in the way that was that you followed clues and got me."

Impact on the Final

However, the Faithful didn't uncover James; instead, he delivered himself on a plate. His roundtable confession wasn't his only error, though. He notably declined to assist his fellow Traitors, Maya and King Kenny, during a recent cash-building challenge.

The confession has undoubtedly destroyed the outcome of Friday's (October 30) final, and potentially the competition entirely. The Faithful now understand that James wasn't an original Traitor, as Claudia Winkleman would never have selected a devoted Faithful.

Therefore, they'll probably examine who might have been, and who might have recruited him. This implicates Maya, who, until lately, has progressed through the competition smoothly.

Future of the Show in Doubt

What if future Traitors contestants decide to follow James's lead when the pressure mounts? The future of the programme is now in serious doubt. The BBC must intervene swiftly, or the show risks descending into complete disarray.

While it is entirely understandable that James may have found it impossible to carry on beyond the roundtable, following reports of a panic attack, it seems certain that Maya and Kenny will find themselves firmly in the spotlight. Despite the intense scrutiny that is sure to follow, both of them deserve to claim victory. It is Celebrity Traitors, after all.

The Celebrity Traitors is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
