BBC Radio 2 presenter Vernon Kay's show descended into brief chaos on Friday morning after traffic reporter Jules Lang stumbled over a word and declared she was "done". The 52-year-old host stepped in during his long-running show when Jules hit an issue pronouncing a word near the end of her travel report.
Light-hearted exchange
The television personality, known for fronting programmes such as The One Show and Formula E coverage, leapt in when Jules declared she was "done". The traffic reporter had been delivering her update on the roads when she faltered over a particular word, before conceding: "That's unlike me."
After suffering several on-air blunders himself, Vernon quipped in response: "It's not unlike this show." Jules shot back shortly after: "It's the beast....That'll be it...[laughing]...I'm done."
Following this light-hearted exchange, Vernon sought clarification from his co-star, asking: "You're finished? Given up?" Jules confirmed she had indeed reached her limit, cheekily responding: "That's it. I've had enough."
Vernon's playful threat
Jules' struggle led Vernon to contemplate giving up himself, and getting Jeremy Vine to take to the airwaves earlier than planned. He replied warmly: "I like you Jules, I like you. Imagine if we did that, P Mac...let's just leave it, let's get [Jeremy] Vine in early."
This isn't the first time Vernon has had to stop a show's segment midway through, after emotions have been heightened. Last month, during an interview with The Script's Danny O'Donoghue, Vernon became very emotional.
Emotional interview
Danny, The Script's frontman, was appearing on the show's Tracks Of My Year's section, and started talking about his late bandmate Mark Sheehan. Mark died in 2023 at the age of 46. During their interview Vernon asked Danny if he'd had "an open forum conversation about how much you loved him" with Mark, who was diagnosed with a condition just before his death, and became emotional in the process of asking that question.
Danny replied: "Yeah. It wasn't as long as you would have liked it to be, because it was quite a short period of time between me finding out and him passing, but we did. I look back on it and go, even if we didn't have that conversation, I knew. I've known him since I was 13-years-old, do you know what I mean?"
Vernon became more emotional, as he admitted that Danny's comments and the topic had hit a nerve. He said: "It's got me that.....Give me a minute." Later, after Danny had comfortingly said, "Oh dude", Vernon said he'd become tearful because of his close relationship with his own friends. He said: "I just think that, when you have that relationship with a friend, it's special. The reason I broke down is because I've got great mates, do you know? I've got fab mates, and I can't imagine going through what Danny went through with Mark."
