The Great British Bake Off returned to screens on Tuesday (September 29) with Biscuit Week, and the first elimination of the series left both contestants and viewers in tears. Danni, a 25-year-old HGV service centre administrator, was sent home after failing to impress judges Paul Hollywood and Nigella Lawson, who has replaced Dame Prue Leith, alongside hosts Alison Hammond and Noel Fielding.
Emotional Exit Speech
Danni faced challenges in the American-style cookies, iced gems, and the showstopper biscuit mosaics. Upon hearing the judges' decision, she said: “Thank you so much. It’s been so lovely!” before standing up and taking a bow.
She added: “I'm really happy that I was the first one out, because I know everyone in there is more skilled than me. But I think I've learned something about myself, which is that in the right circumstances, I can make quite a few friends!” Danni continued: “Finding love in a group of strangers, that’s just beautiful. There are people who do appreciate me, and can appreciate you and will be your friend.”
Fans and Fellow Bakers React
Fellow contestant Clara broke down in tears as Danni told her: “Hey no tears!” Clara said: “We got so close to each other, it’s so sad, she’s so amazing.”
On X, viewers shared their reactions. One person said: “Danni might not have been the best baker but I saw myself in them, I’ll miss them in the tent.” Another wrote: “That exit speech broke me heart a little bit.” A third added: “Danni showed how to leave with class and dignity.” A fourth penned: “Oh Danni. You are a fabulous individual and it has been a delight to have you beamed into my front room, albeit too briefly. Onwards, and most definitely upwards.”
Star Baker Triumph
Tom, a hairdresser from Yorkshire, was awarded star baker after topping the technical challenge with the best iced gems of the week. Although his showstopper entry didn’t go to plan and caused him to break down in tears, the judges still named him star baker, leaving him delighted.
