James Acaster's unprecedented confession to being a Traitor during the penultimate episode of Celebrity Traitors has dramatically shifted the balance of power, giving the Faithfuls a crucial victory and raising the stakes for Friday's final.
The comedian, who had been described as a 'reluctant Traitor', admitted his identity at the roundtable after facing mounting suspicion from the Faithfuls. His confession, a series first, led to his swift banishment and dealt a significant blow to the Traitors' once-solid standing.
Acaster's Shock Admission
Acaster's confession came after the Faithfuls, reeling from the banishment of Joanne McNally and the murder of Sharon Rooney, decided to change their approach. James Blunt suggested they focus on quieter players, and Acaster soon found himself in the firing line, particularly for his aggressive pursuit of McNally.
As the comedian received heat for his quiet demeanor and the library theory, he made an unprecedented move. "I was made a Traitor without wanting to be," he confessed. "It's me. Vote for me." The Faithfuls swiftly voted him off, in a huge win for their cause.
Traitors Under Pressure
Acaster's admission has rocked the Traitors' unit, which had previously included Hannah Fry and King Kenny. Despite losing Fry to banishment midway through, the remaining Traitors had largely gone undetected, with the Faithfuls instead banishing their own. In fact, all three Traitors had been named as the most trustworthy players in the game.
Maya Jama now faces immense heat going into the final episode. The decision whether to murder Michael Sheen, who has been leading the charge against the remaining Traitors, could have huge repercussions. Killing Sheen could eliminate her biggest threat, though suspicions would likely fall on her.
Final Showdown Looms
Acaster, speaking to friend Ed Gamble on Uncloaked, said his decision to confess has opened up the game. "Now we've got a proper final on our hands," he said. "With three Traitors, it would have been a foregone conclusion that we were gonna win. I went into that roundtable thinking I had no heat on me. It was a surprise. But I was glad they caught me."
With just one episode to go, everything is to play for ahead of the final banishment. While a Traitors win is still a possibility, Jama and Kenny are entering the final with far more heat and much less confidence. The final episode airs on BBC One at 8pm.
