A new documentary series is bringing 9/11 survivors face to face with the strangers who saved their lives, a quarter of a century after the attacks. 9/11 Reunited, airing on Disney+ and National Geographic, offers survivors, first responders and witnesses the chance to reconnect with those who changed the course of their lives on 11 September, 2001.
Emotional Reunions After 25 Years
In a trailer for the series, one survivor embraces a rescuer, his voice breaking as he says he would not be here today without him. Another female survivor reflects on a stranger who stepped into harm's way for her, saying, "Because of him I had hopes, dreams — like, it means everything."
A further woman, who spent years wondering what became of the person who pulled her through, is overcome with emotion when reunited with him on camera. "That bond will always be there between us," she says. "I want him to know that he changed my life."
Honouring Those Lost
National Geographic described how strangers found each other in the most unimaginable circumstances, adding: "Many of these emotional reunions take place for the first time in 25 years, providing a rare opportunity to ask long-held questions, express gratitude, and reflect on how those moments have stayed with them for decades."
The series also pays tribute to the firefighters, paramedics, NYPD officers and Port Authority police officers who lost their lives that day.
Digital Archive and Broadcast Details
Beyond the docuseries, National Geographic will launch a digital experience in early September featuring video archives of never-before-seen footage, exclusive interviews and original source material. The network added: "Available on NatGeo.com, the searchable archive invites audiences to explore eyewitness testimony and the lasting aftermath of September 11 through an immersive, multi-perspective experience."
9/11 Reunited is available to stream on Disney+ and airs on Sunday, August 23, from 9pm on National Geographic.
