US singer Oliver Tree, 32, has died in a helicopter crash in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, according to police. The accident occurred when two helicopters collided above an electric vehicle depot in the city.
Victims Identified
The helicopter carrying Oliver Tree, born Oliver Tree Nickel, was found in the city's Southwest district. Other victims include Lucas Vignale, Gaspar Prim, Lucas Brito Chaves, and pilots Alexandre Souza and Charles Marsillac. Civil Police have launched an investigation and requested a forensic examination of the crash site.
Tributes Pour In
Dutch DJ and producer Oliver Heldens, a close friend, paid tribute on social media, sharing a photo of them together in Tokyo. He wrote: "I can not believe it... Rest in peace brother, you were one of a kind and you'll be truly missed. See you again in another life."
Oliver Tree, known for hits like Miss You and Life Goes On, was touring South America on The World's First Tour. He had performed in São Paulo days before the crash and was scheduled to perform in Lisbon, Portugal, on July 1.
Early Career
Tree first gained attention at age 17, collaborating with Skrillex and Zeds Dead as Tree. He released his debut independent record Spilling Branches and joined the band Irony as lead vocalist and guitarist. He later signed with RandS Records, releasing the EP Demons in 2013, earning praise from Radiohead's Thom Yorke for his rendition of Karma Police.
After stepping away from music, he studied music technology at the California Institute of the Arts. He returned in 2016 with the song Forget It featuring rapper Getter.
