Mel C Almost Kicked Out of Spice Girls Over 'Disgusting' Comment to Victoria Beckham
Mel C Nearly Kicked Out of Spice Girls Over Beckham Spat

Mel C was almost expelled from the Spice Girls before their career had even started, following a heated exchange with Victoria Beckham at the 1996 Brit Awards. The singer, now 52, revealed on The Louis Theroux Podcast that her bandmates deemed her behaviour 'disgusting' and that manager Simon Fuller warned her she would be fired if it happened again.

The Incident at the Brit Awards

At the time, the Spice Girls were signed to Virgin Records but had not yet released any music. They attended the Brit Awards in February 1996, sitting on a table with Lenny Kravitz. After a few champagnes, Mel C told Victoria Beckham to 'f**k off' during a minor disagreement about finding their car. Mel C did not think much of it at the time, but the next morning she was confronted by Mel B and Geri Halliwell, who were living nearby in Watford.

'They were just disgusted with my behaviour,' Mel C recalled. 'I woke up going, "Oh, last night was fun," where I had completely brushed off that situation. But obviously, it had really affected people in a way I hadn't realised.'

Consequences and Management Intervention

Mel C was summoned to a meeting with manager Simon Fuller, who told her 'in no uncertain terms' that 'if anything ever happened like that again, I would be gone.' The threat sent her into 'terror' as she feared losing everything she had dreamed of since childhood. 'I might have f*cked it all up,' she said. The band, all under 24 at the time, policed each other's behaviour to maintain their image, with Louis Theroux noting that even removing her ponytail was seen as a violation of their look.

Fortunately, the incident blew over, and the Spice Girls went on to release three successful albums before their hiatus in 2000. They have reunited in various configurations over the years, but a full five-piece performance remains elusive.

Future Plans and Legacy

Mel C is currently on her first world tour in 20 years, following the success of her solo album Sweat. She expressed hope for a full Spice Girls reunion, saying, 'I want to see us on stage together. We could do Glastonbury, we could do the Sphere in Las Vegas.' She also addressed rumours of an ABBA-style hologram show, noting it would be 'an amazing thing for us to do, for that legacy to be able to live on,' but emphasised the importance of live performances while they still can.
