Corbin Bleu's Remarkable Transition from Disney Star to Stage Sensation
Best known to millions as Chad Danforth, the loyal best friend to Zac Efron's Troy Bolton in the beloved High School Musical trilogy, Corbin Bleu has dramatically evolved his career. Now, at 37, the American actor is poised to potentially claim one of theatre's highest honours, an Olivier Award, this Sunday.
From Teen Idol to Theatrical Contender
Corbin Bleu is nominated for Best Actor in a Supporting Role at the prestigious Olivier Awards for his performance in The Great Gatsby - A New Musical at London's historic Coliseum. This nomination marks a significant milestone, occurring two full decades after he first captured hearts as a teenage star on the Disney Channel.
His artistic journey began exceptionally early. By the tender age of two, Corbin was already working in commercials and modelling for major brands like Gap and Tommy Hilfiger. He naturally followed in the footsteps of his father, actor David Reivers, who notably played his on-screen father in several projects, including High School Musical, Jump In!, and Free Style.
A Flourishing Stage Career Across the Atlantic
Corbin's theatrical ambitions were clear from childhood. He made his Broadway debut at just 20 years old, originating the role of Usnavi de la Vega in the acclaimed musical In The Heights. His West End debut came much later, last year, when he portrayed Nick Carraway opposite Amber Davies's Jordan Baker in The Great Gatsby.
Following the London run, he returned to Broadway to reprise the role of Nick. His impressive stage resume is extensive, including performances as Ted Hanover in Holiday Inn, Seaweed J. Stubbs in Hairspray, and even Jesus Christ in Godspell. A standout performance as Bill Calhoun/Lucentio in Kiss Me, Kate earned him a Drama Desk Award nomination for Outstanding Featured Actor.
Reflections on Legacy and Inspiration
In a candid interview on Amber Davies's Call To Stage podcast, Corbin reflected on his lifelong connection to theatre. "I had my sights set on Broadway from a very early age," he revealed, noting that a school paper from the second grade already mentioned his Broadway dreams.
He also spoke fondly, yet with perspective, about the enduring impact of High School Musical. "I know that will always be the major symbol on my flag and I am grateful for that. It is the gift that keeps on giving," he said. "It's surreal to me that I'm a part of that... But there is of course that we are 20 years out from it and I've had an entire career since then."
His bond with the franchise remains strong; he maintains a close friendship with his on-screen love interest, Monique Coleman, who played Taylor McKessie.
Life Beyond the Stage Lights
Corbin's talents extend well beyond acting. He was the runner-up on the 17th season of ABC's Dancing With The Stars and has released two music albums. In 2021, he reunited with Monique Coleman for the festive film A Christmas Dance Reunion.
Today, he resides in the United States with his wife of many years, fellow actress Sasha Clements.
The Olivier Awards 2026: A Golden Anniversary
The upcoming Olivier Awards ceremony, celebrating its 50th anniversary, will be held at the magnificent Royal Albert Hall on April 12th. The frontrunners for London's most coveted theatre prizes are Paddington: The Musical and Into The Woods, each boasting an impressive 11 nominations. For Corbin Bleu, the night represents the culmination of a lifelong dedication to the craft of musical theatre, far beyond the halls of East High.
