A Winchburgh primary school pupil has seen his dream bedroom become a reality after winning a competition launched by Persimmon Homes. The housebuilder, which is delivering new homes at The Scholars development opposite the new Hawkhill Primary School, challenged pupils to design their ideal bedroom for one of its new show homes.
More than 30 budding designers entered, with Persimmon Homes East Scotland Sales Director Laura Still selecting Oliver’s imaginative space-themed creation as the winner. Working closely with interior designers, Laura transformed the youngster’s drawings into a fully furnished bedroom in the show home, just a stone’s throw from the school.
Winner announced at school assembly
Joined by local councillors Janet Campbell and Tony Boyle, Laura visited Hawkhill Primary School to announce the winner during a special assembly before surprising Oliver with a trip to The Scholars development to see his design brought to life for the first time. Now known as “Oliver’s Space”, the room has become a firm favourite among young visitors to the show home, with its out-of-this-world theme proving a hit with families. As a thank you for his creativity, Persimmon presented Oliver with vouchers for him to enjoy during the summer holidays.

Laura Still, Sales Director at Persimmon Homes East Scotland, said: “We were blown away by the standard of entries and choosing a winner was no easy task. Oliver’s design really stood out for its creativity and enthusiasm, and it was fantastic to work with our interior designers to bring his vision to life. Seeing his reaction when he walked into the room made it all worthwhile.”
Councillor Tony Boyle said: “As one of the local councillors, I’m delighted to see Persimmon’s engagement with Hawkhill Primary School and the wider community through its support for the Gala Day. Thank you for the invitation to meet competition winner Oliver and see his winning design brought to life by Persimmon’s interior designer as ‘Oliver’s Space’ in the show home. It was fantastic to see his reaction and the pride he took in seeing his idea become a reality.”
Councillor Janet Campbell added: “Can I say thank you to Persimmon for the invitation to view the bedroom designed by Oliver, a pupil at Hawkhill Primary School. I would like to pay tribute to Persimmon for their investment in this community. Not only have they engaged in a most striking way, inspiring our young people, they are proactively working with West Lothian College in order to provide apprenticeships for young men and women from West Lothian.”
