Whoopi Goldberg Faces Backlash Over 2009 Polanski Comments on The View
Whoopi Goldberg Criticised for 2009 Polanski Remarks on The View

A resurfaced video clip from 2009 has ignited fresh controversy, placing Whoopi Goldberg under intense scrutiny for comments she made about director Roman Polanski on the ABC talk show The View. The unearthed footage, which has recently gone viral on social media platform X, captures a heated exchange between Goldberg and co-host Sherri Shepherd regarding Polanski's 1977 arrest and conviction.

Controversial Remarks on Historical Case

In the clip from seventeen years ago, the 70-year-old Sister Act actress discussed Polanski's guilty plea to unlawful sex with a minor, a charge stemming from his sexual encounter with 13-year-old Samantha Geimer. Polanski, now 92, fled the United States to France in 1978 before sentencing, where he continued his filmmaking career due to France's policy of not extraditing its citizens.

During the on-air discussion, Goldberg expressed uncertainty about the case's facts, stating: "I know it wasn't rape, rape. I think it was something else, but I don't believe that it was rape, rape." She emphasized the importance of distinguishing between allegations and proven charges, saying: "All I'm trying to get you to understand is we're talking about what someone did and what they were charged with, we have to say what it actually was, not what we thought it was."

Heated Exchange with Co-host

Sherri Shepherd strongly challenged Goldberg's perspective, reminding viewers of the case details: "He gave her quaaludes, he gave her champagne, she was drugged, she was 13 years old." Goldberg countered by noting that sexual activity had occurred previously, to which Shepherd responded emphatically: "That's what I'm saying, you're 13 years old! She was still a child."

The case involved Polanski pleading guilty to unlawful sex with a minor as part of a 1977 plea bargain to avoid more serious charges. After serving 42 days in jail, he fled when it appeared a judge might reconsider his release. Geimer has since defended Polanski and was photographed with him in 2023.

Recent Legal Developments and Epstein Connection

This controversy emerges alongside other recent developments involving both figures. In May 2024, Polanski was acquitted of defaming British actor Charlotte Lewis, who accused him of raping her when she was a teenager. Polanski has consistently denied wrongdoing in all cases.

Simultaneously, Goldberg recently addressed why her name appears in the Jeffrey Epstein files during a February 2024 episode of The View. She revealed that an email exchange between Epstein and a redacted individual discussed finding a private plane for her to travel to Monaco for a charity event hosted by Julian Lennon's White Feather Foundation.

Goldberg read the email on air: "It says, 'Whoopi needs a plane to get to Monaco... Julian Lennon's charity is paying for it. They don't want to charter so they're looking for private owners.'" Co-host Sunny Hostin noted that Epstein declined the request in a subsequent message. Goldberg emphasized transparency in discussing the matter, stating clearly: "Now, in the name of transparency... my name is in the files."

The resurfaced 2009 clip has sparked renewed debate about celebrity commentary on sensitive legal cases, particularly those involving sexual misconduct allegations against powerful figures in the entertainment industry.
