New details have emerged about Oscar Pistorius' life after prison, with the former Paralympian and convicted murderer said to have "disappeared off the face of the Earth."
From Olympic Fame to Prison
At the height of his career, the 39-year-old was a world famous sprinter who won six Paralympic golds and became the first double amputee to make it into the Olympics. However, it all ended in tragedy just months later after he shot and killed his model girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine's Day 2013.
Pistorius shot Steenkamp four times through a locked bathroom door, but claimed that he had mistaken her for an intruder. In 2014, a judge ruled that he was not guilty of murder but guilty of culpable homicide, and sentenced to a maximum of five years in prison.
Legal Battles and Sentencing
He was released on parole just one year later but, following an appeal by the state, the conviction for culpable homicide was overturned and the Paralympian was found guilty of murder instead. Pistorius was then sentenced to six years in prison, only for the state to appeal for a longer sentence. The Supreme Court of Appeal then imposed a sentence of 15 years, with the time he had already served reducing the sentence to 13 years and five months.
After being released from prison on parole in January 2024, he now lives in a suburb of Waterkloof, Pretoria. A new report from the Daily Mail has shed light on the reality of Pistorius' new life, with the former athlete no longer working in sport.
New Job and Quiet Life
Instead, locals in Waterkloof are reported as saying that he landed a job with a sound engineering company following his release from prison, although the specifics of his new role remain unknown.
"We don't want to know about him around here," one local resident told the publication. "He's like a ghost. He's disappeared off the face of the Earth and most people are happy for it to stay like that. Apparently he has a job now, although no major company would go near him."
Pistorius is also reported to be living with his uncle Arnold, with the pair sharing a mansion that has a swimming pool and gym and heavy security measures, including guard dogs.
New Relationship and Future Plans
The former sprinter - who was nicknamed 'Blade Runner' during his athletics career - is also reportedly living with his mini poodle, while he has found love again since his release from prison. It was reported last year that Pistorius is now in a relationship with South African business management consultant Rita Greyling.
According to the Mail, the former Paralympian is said to be "besotted" with Greyling and "wants to settle down and have kids" with her as he looks to rebuild his life.
Parole Conditions
For now, Pistorius will continue to live under parole conditions that will remain in place until his sentence expires in December 2029. Under the conditions, he will be monitored by an official and will need to inform them if he seeks out any job opportunities or moves to a new address. In addition, following his release from prison, he is required to continue anger management therapy and attend sessions on gender-based violence.
