Chilling new details have emerged in the desperate search for missing British teenager Jay Slater, as audio obtained by the Mirror reveals his final, harrowing words to a friend.
The 19-year-old apprentice bricklayer from Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire, was last heard from on Monday morning, telling friend Lucy Mae Law he was lost in the remote, mountainous terrain of Tenerife's Rural de Teno park. In a desperate call, he revealed he was lost, had no water, and his phone battery was on the verge of dying.
'He was slipping on the rocks', Lucy Mae recounted, detailing the distressing final moments of their conversation. 'He said he needed a drink and then the phone cut off. That was the last I heard of him.'
The search for Jay, who was attending a music festival on the island, has now entered its fifth day. Spanish authorities have deployed helicopters, sniffer dogs, and mountain rescue teams to scour the notoriously dangerous and remote landscape where his phone last pinged.
A Desperate Final Call
Lucy Mae explained that Jay had called her around 8:50 AM on Monday after leaving a rental property with two men he had met the night before. He was attempting to walk back to his accommodation, a journey that would take over 10 hours on foot.
'He was on the phone to me and he said his phone was on 1%. He said he was lost, he was thirsty, he needed a drink. He was slipping on the rocks... and then the phone cut off.'
His mother, Debbie Duncan, who has flown to Tenerife to aid the search, described the situation as a 'living nightmare'.
A Massive Search Operation Underway
The search is focused on the unforgiving Masca Gorge and surrounding mountains, an area known for its extreme heat and difficult hiking trails. Rescuers are working against the clock, battling the harsh elements and challenging topography.
Despite the scale of the operation, which has seen officers from the Guardia Civil’s mountain rescue and sniffer dog units combing the area, there have been no significant leads. The family remains hopeful but are pleading for anyone with information to come forward.
