Jane Andrews, the former royal dresser convicted of murdering her boyfriend Thomas Cressman, was previously married to an IBM executive, Christopher Dunn-Butler, as depicted in the new ITV series The Lady.
Andrews met Dunn-Butler at a nightclub, where he presented himself as Charles. He was 20 years her senior and proposed after three months of courtship. They married in August 1990.
In an interview with The Guardian, Andrews described Dunn-Butler as "a very happy-go-lucky guy" and admitted she "craved someone to take care of me." However, the relationship deteriorated due to a lack of physical intimacy, leading to divorce in 1995.
After their separation, Dunn-Butler maintained occasional phone contact with Andrews. During her murder trial, he testified that she called him up to 10 times while in France with Cressman, claiming he was "attacking me." In the early hours after the killing, she called him again, using him as a "listening board."
