Noel Gallagher to Receive Prestigious Songwriter of the Year Honour at Brit Awards
Music legend Noel Gallagher is set to be crowned Songwriter of the Year at the upcoming Brit Awards ceremony in Manchester later this month. The announcement comes fresh off the back of Oasis's highly anticipated reunion world tour, which recently concluded after years of fan speculation.
A Career Defined by Iconic Songwriting
Gallagher, renowned for his work with the seminal Britpop band Oasis and his subsequent project Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds, has previously secured multiple Brit awards throughout his illustrious career. This latest accolade, however, specifically celebrates his exceptional talent for crafting timeless songs. The award is determined by a select panel of expert judges, placing Gallagher in esteemed company alongside previous recipients such as Ed Sheeran, Kid Harpoon, Raye, and Charli XCX.
The songwriter is best known for penning anthemic hits like Wonderwall, Don't Look Back In Anger, and Champagne Supernova for Oasis. The Manchester-based band, which he formed with his brother Liam, dominated the 1990s music scene before their eventual split in 2009 following a well-documented fallout between the siblings.
Return to the Stage and Continued Success
In a move that thrilled fans worldwide, Oasis confirmed their return to live performances in August 2024, ending sixteen years of rumours with the announcement of the Oasis Live 25 tour. During the band's hiatus, Gallagher continued to build his musical legacy, releasing four successful studio albums with Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds.
Stacey Tang, Chairwoman of the 2026 Brit Awards Committee, praised Gallagher's enduring impact. "For more than three decades, Noel has crafted songs that have become part of our collective story – bold, brilliant, and always recognisable," she said. "His songs have soundtracked memories for multiple generations and defined the spirit of British music globally. Honouring Noel as Songwriter of the Year celebrates a remarkable body of work and a creative force that continues to connect and inspire artists and fans worldwide."
A Star-Studded Ceremony in Manchester
Gallagher will accept the award at the ceremony on February 28th at Manchester's Co-op Live arena. The event promises to be a spectacular night of music, with performances scheduled from global superstar Harry Styles, acclaimed singer Olivia Dean, alternative rock band Wolf Alice, and renowned producer Mark Ronson.
Other Notable Nominations for the 2026 Brit Awards
The awards ceremony will also spotlight a range of other talented artists. Olivia Dean and Lola Young lead the nominations this year, each receiving five nods. Singer-songwriter Sam Fender, the most recent recipient of the Mercury Prize, has secured four nominations, including Artist of the Year and Best Album.
In a nostalgic nod to the Britpop era, Pulp has earned their first nomination in thirty years for the Best Group category. Meanwhile, Lily Allen is nominated in three categories: Best Album, Artist of the Year, and Pop Act, underscoring the diverse and vibrant state of the British music industry.
