Dave Grohl Reflects on Foo Fighters' Journey After Taylor Hawkins' Tragic Passing
Grohl on Foo Fighters' Path After Hawkins' Death

Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl has delivered a heartfelt and emotional tribute to the band's late drummer, Taylor Hawkins, characterising him as an "incredible human being" and expressing that the "world is not the same" without his vibrant presence. Hawkins, who passed away suddenly in 2022 at the age of 50, served as a pivotal and beloved member of the iconic American rock group for more than two decades, leaving an indelible mark on both the music and the musicians.

Navigating Grief and Moving Forward

In a candid interview with Zane Lowe on his Apple Music programme, Grohl, aged 57, revealed the profound and multifaceted challenges the band confronted in the aftermath of Hawkins' untimely death. He emphasised that the band members "talk about him every day," underscoring the enduring nature of their loss. Grohl reflected on their extensive shared history, stating: "We had Taylor Hawkins as our drummer for 25 years and, beyond being an amazing drummer, he was this incredible spirit."

Grohl continued, highlighting the deep personal connection: "He was this incredible human being and he was our brother. He was our best friend. So continuing on after Taylor was really complicated, not just for us, but for any drummer that was going to come in to like, you know, fill his shoes." The interview was notably conducted on what would have been Hawkins' 54th birthday, adding a poignant and emotional layer to Grohl's reflections.

A Constant Presence in Daily Life

The musician shared intimate details about how Hawkins remains a constant and palpable presence in their daily routines and creative processes. "We wake up in the morning and everybody just texts about how much we miss him and how the world’s not the same without him, but we still feel him very much," Grohl explained. "We always talk about him every f****** day. In everything we do we want to have that energy – we want to have that energy for Taylor."

Hawkins had performed with the Foo Fighters, alongside former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl on vocals, for over two decades. The current lineup includes Grohl, Nate Mendel, Pat Smear, Chris Shiflett, and Rami Jaffee. Following Hawkins' passing, American drummer Ilan Rubin reportedly joined the group in 2025 to fill the void. With a legacy spanning over three decades in the music industry, the band is poised to release their latest album, Your Favourite Toy, in April.

Creative Direction for the Twelfth Album

Grohl also delved into the band's creative mindset and artistic direction for their twelfth studio record. "I got to this place where I was like, so what’s the intention? What’s the ambition? Like what are we? It’s our 12th record," he mused. "We’ve been a band for 30 years and as people, we’re evolving and we’re growing. Where do we go from here? What do we do?" He articulated a clear desire to craft new music that would "make us jump around and smile and scream," channelling the band's energetic roots.

Recounting the album's creative genesis, Grohl detailed spending approximately a year and a half writing and experimenting, which generated "30 or 40 different ideas." He found a spark of inspiration one evening while listening to a personal playlist: "randomly there were these 10 songs in a row in my playlist that were all just like noisy, loud bangers. Up-tempo, like back to the old days. I was like, ‘wait a minute, maybe this is the record’."

The Foo Fighters, renowned for timeless hits such as Everlong and Best Of You, have amassed an impressive 15 Grammy Awards and achieved six number one albums in the United Kingdom.
