Barry Manilow Announces Further Tour Delays Following Health Consultation
Music icon Barry Manilow has delivered disappointing news to his fans, announcing further postponements to his scheduled tour performances. The 82-year-old singer, famous for hits like Copacabana, took to Instagram on Friday to share an update regarding his ongoing health recovery.
Surgeon's Assessment Leads to Performance Rescheduling
Manilow revealed he had what he described as a 'very depressing visit' with his surgeon, resulting in the need to reschedule shows originally planned between February 27 and March 17. This marks the second time the entertainer has had to delay performances related to his health concerns.
The singer had previously disclosed in December that doctors discovered a cancerous spot on his left lung, which was subsequently surgically removed. While initially optimistic about returning to touring, Manilow's latest update indicates his recovery is progressing slower than anticipated.
Physical Limitations Despite Rehabilitation Efforts
In a three-part Instagram note to his 127,000 followers, Manilow explained that despite rigorous rehabilitation efforts including 'using the treadmill three times a day,' he still cannot 'sing more than three songs in a row.' His medical team has advised that his body simply isn't prepared to handle the demands of a full 90-minute concert set.
'I'm so sorry,' the musician lamented about the additional delays, acknowledging the inconvenience to fans who had been anticipating his return to the stage.
Revised Performance Timeline and Fan Support
According to Manilow's update, his surgeon now predicts he may be able to resume his Las Vegas residency shows 'at the very end of March' with arena performances potentially beginning in April. The singer expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support from fans, writing: 'In the meantime and once again, thank you for all your wonderful notes and phone calls of support.'
He added a poignant reflection on his physical state, noting that his body has 'been through hell' and requires additional 'time to heal.'
Previous Tour Plans and Health Discovery
The entertainer was originally scheduled to commence a United States tour in January, with planned stops in multiple cities including Orlando, Tampa, Charleston, Greensboro, and Columbus. Just last month, Manilow had announced six additional concert dates for March, visiting Charlotte, Norfolk, Baltimore, Cincinnati, Nashville, and Lexington.
In a positive health update shared in mid-January, Manilow had declared he was 'feeling great' following the lung surgery and seemed optimistic about his touring prospects. The cancerous spot was discovered somewhat serendipitously after the singer experienced two prolonged bouts of bronchitis, prompting his doctor to order an MRI as a precautionary measure.
Manilow described the early detection as 'pure luck,' emphasizing the importance of thorough medical examination even after apparent recovery from respiratory issues.
Outpouring of Support from Fans and Colleagues
The announcement prompted an immediate wave of supportive responses on social media. Journalist Leeza Gibbons commented: 'This is the right move Barry! Everyone is supportive and willing to wait! You are loved!' Radio host Melissa Forman added: 'Could u be ANY sweeter? This is why we all love you.'
International fans also expressed their understanding, with one follower from the United Kingdom writing: 'Come back when you are ready, Barry. We'll still be here for you! Take your time and get well soon. Big love from the UK.'
As the music legend continues his recovery journey, fans worldwide await his return to the stage, prioritizing his health and wellbeing over immediate performance schedules.
