The Bodyguard: The Musical opened at Newcastle Theatre Royal on Monday night, thrilling audiences with a host of Whitney Houston songs and brilliant choreography. The opening scene, echoing the 1992 film, silenced the crowd with gunshot effects.
The stage adaptation stays true to the original story: pop star Rachel Marron receives death threats, and former Secret Service agent Frank Farmer is hired to protect her. As they grow closer, Frank must choose between duty and love.
Star Performances
Andy Garcia charms as Frank Farmer, while Mireia Mambo, as alternate Rachel Marron, delivers a commanding vocal and nuanced performance. Sasha Monique impresses as Rachel's sister Nicki, singing "Saving All My Love" with deep emotion. Phoenix Beharry plays Rachel's son Fletcher with amazing dance moves and a wonderful voice.
The supporting cast—John Macaulay, Jonathan Alden, Matt Milburn, and Ryan Bennet—portrays the behind-the-scenes drama of managing a global superstar amid a stalker threat.
