Steps fans demand tour as Halloween mix of Scared Of The Dark released

Steps released a new single on October 1 - a Halloween reworking of their 2017 track Scared Of The Dark - but the unexpected comeback has left many fans disappointed, with calls for a tour announcement instead.

The five-piece group, known for hits including Deeper Shade of Blue, One For Sorrow, and Better Best Forgotten, has not released new music since 2022. Earlier this year, reports suggested Lee Latchford-Evans, Claire Richards, Lisa Scott-Lee, Faye Tozer, and Ian 'H' Watkins were set to reunite to mark the 30th anniversary of their debut album, but no official announcement has been made.

Teaser or letdown?

Steps teased their comeback on Instagram on October 1, sharing an image of a pumpkin with the band's name carved into it, before replacing it with a snippet of the video for Scared Of The Dark (Shadows and Secrets Halloween Mix). The original version of the track, released in 2017, peaked at number 37 in the charts.

"Don't turn out the lights!" Steps captioned the post. "Scared Of The Dark (Shadows and Secrets Halloween Mix) is officially OUT NOW. Spooky season begins here... available to stream and download everywhere."

Fans voice frustration

Fans responded with frustration that the reveal was only a reworked version of an existing track, calling for something more substantial. One person replied: "I'm just going to pretend this didn't happen and patiently wait for the tour announcement." Another commented: "These announcements are just turning into clickbait. First Spice Girls and now this."

A third wrote: "I know it's just the beginning for the big announcement. We need a new album and tour." While a fourth confessed: "Okay erm... little bit disappointed now, was so excited yesterday."

Others insisted the announcement was merely a teaser, with more substantial news on the horizon. "It's just a little, funny gift, there is much more coming we all know that," another supporter remarked. "Don't panic people. Steps will never disappoint and this is a bit of fun."
