Sci-fi enthusiasts may have just discovered their perfect Netflix binge-watch for the weekend, according to reports. Netflix is already streaming seasons one and two of the American comedy series Resident Alien, with the third instalment expected to arrive shortly.
The show centers on an extraterrestrial who crash-lands in the quaint Colorado town of Patience. The alien, played by Alan Tudyk, is dispatched to eradicate the human race. He murders a doctor vacationing in the town and assumes his identity as 'Harry Vanderspeigle'.
The alien subsequently becomes the town's doctor, forging an unlikely bond with the mayor's young son, who can perceive his true extraterrestrial form. Despite having no medical knowledge, the alien learns the ropes by watching the TV series Law and Order.
As time passes, the alien grapples with the moral dilemma of his mission after developing genuine connections with the residents of Patience. Ultimately, rather than decimating mankind, the alien resolves to shield the human race from new and dangerous otherworldly threats.
Resident Alien ran for four seasons, with cable broadcaster Syfy confirming in 2025 that the fourth would be its last. Alongside Tudyk, the series featured Sara Tomko, Corey Reynolds, Alice Wetterlund, Levi Fiehler, Judah Prehn, Elizabeth Bowen, and Meredith Garretson.
The show has attracted widespread praise on IMDb. One glowing 10/10 review titled 'The best TV show in years' enthused: 'I love this show. It's fresh, original and hilarious. The acting is top notch, especially Alan Tudyk, and his interactions with the little boy, the only human who knows he's an alien, are the absolute best.' The reviewer added: 'This show is the best thing going right now.'
Another 10/10 review read: 'It has the right blend of comedy and drama with a bit of sci fi thrown in as a backdrop. This is a testament to good writing.' One viewer titled their 9/10 review 'Perfect dark humour' and elaborated: 'Good acting, very funny yet moving story shot in amazing scenery.' Another review stated: 'I am HOOKED! I loved it and I loved the type of humor the show carried and Alan did amazing! My eyes were glued to the screen for sure.'
Resident Alien is streaming on Netflix now.
