Next God of War Game Could Star Faye, Not Kratos or Atreus
Details are emerging about the highly anticipated next installment in the God of War series, and it appears to be a significant departure from the recent adventures of Kratos and his son Atreus. According to multiple industry sources, the upcoming game might not feature the familiar duo as playable protagonists at all, instead shifting focus to a different character entirely.
Faye Rumoured as New Playable Hero
Insider NateTheHate, known for accurate gaming leaks in the past, suggests that Kratos's wife Faye will take centre stage as the playable hero in the next title. This information has been corroborated by other industry figures, including Nick Baker of the DayOne Podcast, who confirmed the reports match what he has heard.
The gameplay is described as having a much larger emphasis on action combat, contrasting with the narrative-driven approach of God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarok. Baker noted the style might be closer to Devil May Cry than the recent God of War entries, based on descriptions he received.
Prequel Story and Development Details
Fans will recall that Faye is deceased by the events of the 2018 game, with her death serving as the catalyst for Kratos and Atreus's journey. Therefore, this new game is expected to be a prequel exploring her story. It remains unclear whether this will be marketed as a spin-off or the next mainline entry in the series.
The project is reportedly being led by Cory Barlog, who directed God of War (2018) before passing the reins to Eric Williams for Ragnarok. Bloomberg's Jason Schreier alluded to the game's development in July 2025, stating it "might feel like" a new intellectual property despite being part of an existing franchise.
Release Timeline and Broader Franchise Plans
According to NateTheHate, Sony is targeting an early 2027 release for this title. Meanwhile, data miners recently uncovered what they believe to be the opening cutscene for another chapter focusing on Atreus, hinting at encounters with Egyptian mythology gods.
Christopher Judge, the voice actor for Kratos, hinted at upcoming announcements later this summer during a fan convention. Additionally, Schreier reported last week that Sony is considering expanding the God of War series into a cinematic universe similar to Marvel's approach, with remakes of the original trilogy also in development alongside an Amazon television adaptation.
This potential shift represents a bold new direction for the beloved franchise, blending established lore with fresh gameplay mechanics and character perspectives.
