Netflix's new teen drama Crew Girl has steadily climbed the top 10 chart throughout September, drawing in viewers despite being labelled 'amazingly bad' and 'the worst' YA show some have seen in a long time. The series follows Teagan (Miku Martineau), a talented rower whose life is upended when her father goes on the run after being accused of financial fraud.
Teagan relocates to her mother's childhood town and enrols at a boarding school that has only recently begun accepting women. With no women's rowing team established, she settles for coxswaining for the boys' team, where she is not taken seriously except as a love interest. A love triangle soon develops between Teagan, the kind-hearted scholarship student Cam (Kyle Clark), and the sixth-generation blonde toff Josh (Samuel Braun), who has unexpected layers.
Mixed reviews and devoted fans
The show has received its fair share of negative reviews, with viewers calling it 'badly done', 'a bore' and 'extremely hard to finish' on Reddit. Despite this, the writer admits to rooting for Josh by the middle of the season and describes the series as 'the easiest watch I've had in a long while'. The show was renewed for a second season, much to the relief of its fans.
What to watch next
