Microsoft has announced that a new entry in the Metro series, Metro 2039, will be revealed this Thursday, April 16, 2026, at 6pm BST. The reveal will be streamed digitally on Xbox's official social channels, with YouTube expected to host the event.
Developed by 4A Games and published by Deep Silver, Metro 2039 is the fourth instalment in the series based on Dmitry Glukhovsky's novels. The previous titles include Metro 2033 (2010), Metro: Last Light, and Metro Exodus (2019).
The games follow protagonist Artyom in a post-apocalyptic world ravaged by nuclear war, where survivors live in Moscow's subway system. Metro Exodus saw Artyom leave the subway on a train journey across the country. 4A Games has taken the story in a different direction from the novels, leaving plot details for 2039 uncertain.
Expectations for the reveal include gameplay footage and a potential release date. The game has been in development since 2020, marking six years of work. Platforms are unconfirmed, but all previous Metro games have launched on Xbox, PlayStation, and PC, with no exclusivity expected.
