Countryfile presenter Matt Baker and his wife Nicola have spoken candidly about spending time apart as she pursues a new career as a children's author. The couple, married for over 20 years, appeared on ITV's Lorraine to discuss how they balance their individual professional commitments.
Nicola Baker's New Career as a Children's Author
Nicola, who previously worked as a physiotherapist while raising their two children, Molly and Luke, has turned her passion for writing into a full-time career. She has published three children's novels: A Whistledown Farm Adventure: Finding Hope (February 2025), Rescuing Ruby, and Meeting Meg, with another instalment due later this year.
During the Lorraine interview, host Lorraine Kelly remarked on their separate pursuits: "You go off doing your own thing writing the books and you go off doing your own things around Britain, so there are times where you are apart. But, don't you think sometimes that works?"
How the Couple Manage Being Apart
Matt explained how they have embraced their separate paths: "We're such doers in our lives, and we're so supportive of what each other wants to do, we've just found our way through." Nicola added that the time apart has made them value their time together more: "We make the most of the time that we have together and prioritise that and make the most of that."
The couple met by chance when Matt was performing at a disco in Cleethorpes. They married over 20 years ago and have two children. In recent years, fans have watched them star in the Channel 4 series Our Farm in the Dales, which follows the couple as they manage a sheep farm near where Matt grew up in the Durham hills.
Matt Baker's Upcoming Countryfile Appearance
Matt is set to return to BBC Two later today, July 12, 2026, teaming up with Sammi Kinghorn in East Devon for the latest episode of Countryfile. Adam Henson will also appear, caring for young livestock on his Cotswolds farm. Countryfile airs Sundays at 7pm on BBC Two.
