Macaulay Culkin is in advanced talks with Disney to return to the Home Alone franchise, 36 years after the original film made him a Hollywood star at the age of 10. The former child actor, who turned 46 last week, is reportedly being courted by studio chiefs for a reboot of the blockbuster series.
Disney courting the original star
According to podcaster and LA showbiz writer Matt Belloni, Disney executives are pursuing Culkin intensively. Belloni said a revival of the beloved series “would be gigantic.”
The franchise is now owned by Disney following its acquisition of 20th Century Fox in 2019. Culkin starred in the original 1990 film and its 1992 sequel, Home Alone 2, but did not appear in any of the four subsequent episodes released between 1997 and 2021.
Plot flip expected
A senior Hollywood production executive confirmed that Disney believes bringing back the original star of the first two – and most successful – Home Alone movies would be a major coup. The executive added that a plot flip would be needed, with Culkin’s character now grown up and having a child of his own.
“Obviously, there will have to be some kind of plot flip whereby Macaulay’s famous character is now grown up and has a kid of his own. I know he’s been discussing all this with Disney, so a firm deal isn’t far away,” the executive said.
