Lego has unveiled its first ever Dragon Ball set, a detailed recreation of the dragon Shenron and Kid Goku on his Flying Nimbus cloud. The set, named Shenron & Goku, is based directly on the original manga and anime, marking a new licensed theme for the company.
A New Anime Theme for Lego
Lego has previously dabbled with anime influences, including the Exo-Force theme from the early 2000s and elements of the modern Ninjago line. While Lego already has sets based on One Piece, that was tied to the Netflix live action adaptation, whereas this new Dragon Ball set draws from the original source material.
The set is described as the first of a new theme, with more Dragon Ball sets planned for 2027. Rumors suggest other franchises may receive similar treatment in the future, setting a high standard for upcoming releases.
Design and Features
The 1,764-piece design recreates the moment Shenron is summoned from the seven collected dragon balls, with Kid Goku riding on his Kintoun, also known as Flying Nimbus. Lego has used the original anime as inspiration, and the engineering is praised as the best Asian style dragon they have ever produced, capturing Shenron's fluid, organic design within Lego's angular format.
The seven dragon balls are included as a neat touch, and Kid Goku becomes the first official Dragon Ball minifigure, repositionable anywhere on the display. When complete, the model stands over 32cm high, 24cm long, and 26cm wide, depending on posing.
Release and Pricing
Dragon Ball: Shenron & Goku is set #11390, part of the Lego Icons line, which also includes licensed sets based on Transformers and The Lord of the Rings. It costs £129.99 and will be released on November 4, available at Lego stores and the Lego website. Lego Insiders can purchase it from November 1 with a free sign-up, and can use 20 loyalty points to get an exclusive digital poster featuring the set.
