Sony Santa Monica Studio has inadvertently confirmed the release window for God of War Laufey through a seemingly casual tweet, revealing that the game will launch within the next 18 months, before January 2028.
The studio announced the game during a recent State of Play event as the next chapter in the mainline Norse saga. Unlike previous entries, the protagonist is not Kratos but his late wife Faye, who navigates the underworld of the gods.
Tweet Reveals Launch Timeline
In response to Sony's announcement that physical discs would be discontinued for new PlayStation games after January 2028, Santa Monica Studio tweeted: “We can confirm God of War Laufey will be available on disc.” This statement confirms the game will release before that cut-off date.
The tweet aligns with earlier reports from Bloomberg's Jason Schreier, who stated in a YouTube video, “I wouldn’t be surprised if [God of War Laufey] gets announced for February or March pretty soon.”
Development and Context
God of War Laufey is the third game in the rebooted Norse saga, following God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarök (2022). Development has been ongoing since 2020, with early concepts dating back before the 2018 game's release. The lack of a release date during the reveal was likely to keep focus on Marvel's Wolverine pre-orders, which launched simultaneously.
Industry insiders expect a 2027 launch, potentially in the first quarter. The game will be exclusive to PS5 and will support physical discs, confirming Sony's continued commitment to physical media for this title.
