The emote, inspired by the opening credits of Peacemaker Season 2, was yanked following backlash from players who realised the choreography references the show's fictional world being controlled by Nazis.
The controversy erupted when fans noted that the arm movements in the emote mirrored those in the TV series, which openly depicts a Nazi-controlled alternate reality. This context, absent at the time of the cosmetic's release, prompted Epic to investigate the creative intentions of their partner. The company announced on Twitter: 'We're disabling the Peaceful Hips Emote in Fortnite as we inquire into our partner's creative intentions in this collab emote. Assuming it's not coming back, we'll issue refunds in the next few days.'
This incident adds to a string of Fortnite emote controversies, including past examples of racial abuse and toxic behaviour that led Epic to disable certain emotes by default. More recently, the Tylil Dance Emote was criticised for incorporating Kanye West's vocals after his public rants. The Peacemaker blunder underscores ongoing challenges for Epic in maintaining a family-friendly image while collaborating with edgy intellectual properties.
For a game primarily targeting younger audiences, such missteps present a poor image. Analysts suggest that Epic's vetting system, already stringent, may need further tightening to prevent similar issues.
