Dungeons & Dragons is going adult-only for the first time in its history. The new book will be shrink-wrapped with a warning label on the front. The setting getting the adults-only treatment is Dark Sun, a sun-scorched wasteland that has not had a proper release in decades. It lands in 2027 with a content warning flagging violence, bloodshed, nudity and sexuality. The warning was not the designers' idea. At a press briefing, the team admitted the lawyers told them it had to go on there. The tagline: Dark Sun is not a world you save. It is a world you survive.
Full Range for Dark Sun
Dark Sun is getting a full range with close to 500 pages of new material: a player expansion, a Dungeon Master expansion, a map pack, a DM screen, and a posh alternate-art Player's Handbook. It also introduces a new character class, the Psion, playable from level one to 20.
World of Warcraft Crossover
The other big announcement is a full World of Warcraft crossover, out on 17 November this year, built alongside Blizzard. Players can rebuild their WoW main or roll a fresh alt for tabletop play. Every MMO species is included, with 11 new ones and new elf lineages. All classes are covered through six new subclasses and three updated ones. The book includes 26 magic items, more than 60 spells, over 50 monsters, 23 factions, and converted dungeons. The Lich King appears, and a separate Icecrown Citadel map pack recreates the raid with poster maps, tokens, and a digital adventure. An official range of miniatures is on the way.
Joe Manganiello as Chief Creative Officer
Actor Joe Manganiello (True Blood, Magic Mike) was announced as Chief Creative Officer of D&D Icons, a new programme bringing founding names back to the table. This includes a reunion: Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman are writing a new Dragonlance book together for the first time in over 20 years. Luke Gygax is finishing an adventure from unpublished material left by his father Gary Gygax. R.A. Salvatore is bringing back Drizzt Do'Urden.
Greyhawk Adventure and Video Game
Greyhawk returns in an adventure called Crown of the Witch Queen, where players take on Drelnza, the vampire daughter of the witch Iggwilv (better known as Tasha). Tasha also appears in a new single-player action game, Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons, voiced and performed by Maggie Robertson, opposite Tricia Helfer as warrior Kaatri. First gameplay drops on 25 August at gamescom.
Looking For Group Tool
Wizards launched a Looking For Group tool on D&D Beyond, with a finder for local games, a rebuilt Discord, and a tie-up with StartPlaying to match players with professional Dungeon Masters. For a limited time, first-timers can book a game for 99 cents. A rebuilt D&D Beyond mobile app arrives in early 2027, built for playing around a table.
